Finding a direction
I grew up on a small island in the Bahamas where, honestly, opportunities were very limited. I always did well in school and was pretty well-rounded, but I still wasn’t sure which direction I wanted to take in life. Finding out I was pregnant at 18 made that uncertainty even scarier. At that point, I knew I needed to figure out a path for myself and my baby.
The care that changed everything
At the ultrasound appointment where I found out I was having a boy, everything started to feel real. I was fascinated by the technology, but the way the sonographer treated me stayed with me just as much. She showed me care and kindness without judgment at a time when I really needed it. I left that appointment thinking, “I want to be that person for somebody else.” For the first time, I could see a different future for myself.
Finding my way through school
I was accepted into Nova Southeastern University’s bachelor’s program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, where I excelled in my classes and passed my boards on the first try. I found visual ways to break down the material that helped me understand it, and I started tutoring other students. I honestly needed to make money while I was in college, but I also realized that the way I explained things was helping people. Some of the students I tutored would tell me I should become a professor one day. I laughed it off because, in my mind, I was there to become a sonographer and scan. I hadn’t imagined teaching becoming such a big part of my life.
A rewarding career. A missing piece.
I loved what ultrasound allowed me to do for patients, and working in the clinical environment was rewarding. I also earned my Master of Health Science in Leadership and Administration, which helped me think more deeply about how people are supported and how we can make meaningful improvements. Still, I felt like something was missing in my career. I kept noticing what sonography students were struggling with and began studying instructional design. So many of the study tools available felt outdated, and I knew there was room to create something that connected better with the way students learn today.
It started with a set of flashcards
Tech Me Out started with a set of flashcards I created at home. I wanted to make the information clearer and more visual, using the kinds of tools I wished I had while I was in school. What began as one idea became a way to support students through some of the hardest parts of their journey.
From study tools to a learning experience
Today, that first set of flashcards has grown into physical and digital study tools, video lessons, and interactive learning experiences that have helped thousands of students. My vision is to help transform sonography education into something students can see, explore, and enjoy working through. I want you to spend more time actually understanding the material and less time feeling buried in it.
And the story is still growing
I’m now building specialty registry reviews, beginning with GYN, so that support can continue into your next chapter. The lessons, activities, and Review Lab are being created with the same purpose that started Tech Me Out: helping you understand what you’re learning and feel more confident using it.
